Global Textile Import Market in 2022

In 2022, the European Union (EU) emerged as the world's foremost importer of textiles, with an import value reaching approximately 78 billion U.S. dollars. This staggering figure highlights the EU's pivotal role in the global textile trade, surpassing other major importers like the United States and Vietnam, which imported textiles worth 39 billion U.S. dollars and 19 billion U.S. dollars, respectively.

International Textile Trade

The international textile trade is a dynamic and complex market, with China standing out as a key player. China’s textile industry is a cornerstone of its economy, fueling significant exports worldwide. The country's vast manufacturing capabilities and competitive pricing make it a dominant force in the textile and clothing sectors.

Within the EU, the textile and clothing industry is equally vital. As of 2020, the EU housed a substantial number of textile and clothing companies, reflecting a diverse and robust sector. About 66 percent of these companies were focused on clothing, 34 percent specialized in textiles, and a small fraction, less than one percent, were dedicated to man-made fibers.

The EU's Textile Import Landscape

The EU's position as the leading importer of textiles is driven by several factors:

Diverse Fashion Industry: Europe is home to some of the world's most influential fashion capitals, such as Paris, Milan, and London. The demand for a wide variety of textiles to support this vibrant industry is immense.

High Consumer Demand: European consumers have a strong appetite for both high-end and affordable fashion, necessitating a constant influx of textiles to meet diverse preferences and trends.

Strong Manufacturing Base: Despite being major importers, European countries also have a solid textile manufacturing sector that relies on imported raw materials and semi-finished products to create finished goods.

The Global Context

The United States and Vietnam also play significant roles in the textile import market. The U.S., with its sizable population and fashion industry, imported textiles worth 39 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Vietnam, a burgeoning market with a rapidly growing apparel sector, imported textiles valued at 19 billion U.S. dollars the same year.
